Section 2.2
Information Format
The list adopts the following format.
- Game Name [Format]
Comments
The information in the brackets details the test setup. It is of the form :-
(RPC host processor (Memory of RPC) : PC card type, PC card software version)
e.g. 710 (10) : SX33, v1.92
2.2 3D Run Abouts
- Alone in the Dark [I-III on CD]
Works fine. Playable but animations can be slow (due to CD/HD apparently). (710 in RPC 600 (10) SX33 v1.9). Sound ok.
- Blake Stone
Works [Wolf 3D in space]
- Cybermage [Demo]
VGA and VESA. Card detected but no sound. Playable only under VGA with small screen. (710 (26) : DX2-66 v2.01)
- Dark Forces
Average compatibility but slow unless screen size is reduced. Sound ok (on demo), (710 (26) : DX2-66 v1.995). Might be problems with some systems.
- Descent
Playable but benefits from lots of memory. (610 (13) SX33 v1.91)
- Descent 2
Playable at small screen sizes, jerky at full screen size. No sound, despite the card being detected. (710 (26) : DX2-66 v1.995)
- Doom [HD]
Works but is slow (710 (10) : SX33 v1.92). Playable on 586 card. (610 (12) : 586 v1.993)
Still pretty slow on a 586 using PCPro.
Sound works but can become distorted. (710 (9) DX2-66 v1.91). It needs monitor definition file for full screen display.
For more information about the speed of Doom see the Benchmark section in the main list.
Sound tip for Doom / Heretic (from c.s.a.games)
Run game, return to the desktop and type *fx 1,208,48
Apparently this improves the sound though I don't know why. Beware though, the use of FX commands is a bit dodgy as they are only in the command set for backwards compatibility.
- Doom II [HD]
Works but is very slow. (710/610 SX33/DX80 s/w 1.92/1.91). Much better on a 586 card.
Sound works but is distorted.
- Doom Editing Utilities
Srolling is slow. VESA mode works (PCPro - DX/100).
- Duke Nukem 3D
Very slow on (610 (40) : DX2-80 v1.995). *Fairly* playable on a 586 card and sound works well. Under PcPro it's still pretty slow compared to a real PC. Also slow over a network. Game speeds up if the sound is configured to be off. Likes being given lots of memory.
Sound might need SharedMemFlags set to 0 in the config file. NOTE : Do this at your own risk and read the documentation before you make this modification as it can cause trouble with DMA SCSI cards. Also the sound might only work when set up for 3 voices, 8 bit stereo.
Works fine at 640x480 and 800x600 except that it is very slow. VESA works on 2.01 (run from DOS not in DOSBox).
- Eye of the Beholder I and II
Slow intro, otherwise fine.
- Eye of the Beholder III
Imperfect colour mapping
- Fade to Black [CD]
Average compatibility but slow. (v1.91)
Doesn't run under VESA mode but works under 320 x 200. Video sequences are very slow. Sound ok.
- Heretic Version 1.2
Works, playable on (710 (9) DX2-66 v1.91) Sound is distorted. Runs well with a 586 and PCPro, even at max screen size. Needs monitor definition file for full screen display.
Some versions of Heretic don't work, get the patch from iD Software; Good frame rate.
- Hexen [CD]
Works. Slower than Heretic, faster than Doom (710 (9) DX2-66 v1.91).
Runs nicely under PCPro on a 586.
Sound is slow. Needs MDF for full screen. Graphics & sound are slow on 610, SX33.
Playable of 586 card (sound is ok).
- Pyrotechnica [Demo]
Too slow. Crashes.
- Quake
Works on DX4-100, playable when screen size is reduced. Sound disappears. Needs a floating point processor (i.e. not SX33).
- Rebel Assault [CD ?]
Works but is slow.
- Space Hulk
Works. Playability unknown.
- Wolfenstein 3D
Worked under v1.8x not under v1.91 (710 : SX33)
